Recommended Products for Scrapvenger Books

After you've completed the scavenger hunt, it's time to personalize your Scrapvenger Book! While all you really need is photos and some tape, there are a few more things you can do to make your book a little extra special (and easier!) Here are the tools and accessories we recommend for the scrapbooking phase of your Scrapvenger Book.

Photos

The first step is of course taking photos. The best quality photos, in most cases, will come from a smart phone. You can either take the photos yourself or let your child take them on your phone.

Tip! Create a photo folder for this project. Every time you take a photo for the book, immediate add it to the folder. That makes it easy to find and print the photos later.

If you really want to let your child lead the way, get them their own camera. There are tons of options out there these days. We personally have tried a few, and this camera is our favorite.

Then, you'll need to get your photos printed. The easiest option is to get photos printed from a place like CVS or Walgreens, which are usually available for same-day pickup.

I personally prefer to order prints on Shutterfly. I just think the printing is better. The shipping is a bit more, but I do find the quality to be a noticeable improvement.

Tape Runner

Other than photos, this is the only thing you really need. (You can use tape instead, but this is easier and looks nicer.) You can grab these at any craft store or places like Target or Walmart. Sometimes even the Dollar Store even carries them. I like to order a multi-pack like this one and keep them on hand.

Scissors or Paper Cutter

The photo blocks in the standard Scrapvenger Book are 3.5x5". That's a little smaller than the standard 4x6" print, so you'll want to trim them.

You can use regular scissors for this, or upgrade to a mini paper cutter for under $10. If you have little kids, you might need to trim the photos for them.

Tip: Take a sheet of white paper and trace the photo block from the book. Cut it out. Then use this as a stencil on the back of your photos.

For older kids, trimming the photos can be part of the crafting process. Set them up with a collection of zig-zag crafting scissors and they have one more thing to craft with.

Pens & Markers

Scrapvenger Books are made to be personalized. There's several places to take notes, add "answers" or keep track of clues, and document the details of your trip. The paper is a little glossy, so some inks may smear if they don't dry completely. For that reason, I'd avoid using standard Crayola markers.

For older kids, Sharpies are great. The standard or ultra fine tips both work well, and they come in black or multi-color packs. You could also use a no-smear gel pen like these, if you prefer.

For younger kids who can't yet be trusted with permanent markers, stick to crayons or colored pencils. Both write nicely in the book without the risk of smudging or staining. You could also use a fine-tip marker like these, which dry a bit quicker.

Washi Tape & Stickers

These items are fun and optional ways to customize your book even more.

Washi tape is a scrapbook and crafting staple. It's a semi-sticky paper tape that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. You can find it at craft stores and most any store with a craft section (like Target, Walmart or the Dollar Store.) There are also tons of options on Amazon

For stickers, you can usually find them in gift shops and paper stores at your destination, which makes them feel extra special. I also really like to grab stickers at coffee shops or restaurants if I see them. Depending on the destination, you can also find relevant sticker sheets in most craft aisles.

And that's it!

With just a few core materials, you can hand this project off to your child and see what they come up with.

Have fun!
